determind that Nami be part of his pirate crew he asks Zoro and Usopp to follow after Nami and bring her back as part of the crew When Usopp and Zoro arrive at Kokoyashi Village where the Going Merry is docked Usopp encounters a local girl named Zojiko who identifies herself as Nami s older adopted sister and explains that their mother Bellemere died a long time ago Nojiko tells Usopp that Nami betrayed Kokoyashi village and joined with the Arlong Pirates for money Nojiko explains that Arlong comes into the village every month and the people of the village must pay him money or they will die This includes women and children Nojiko has an encounter with Nami at their mother s grave and Nami explains to her that she only needs seven billion more beli the currency of One Piece and then she can buy Kokoyashi Village She made an agreement with Arlong that if she were to give him one hundred billion beli she could buy the village from him and he would never bother the villagers for money again She and Nojiko talk about her adventures with Luffy and co and Nojiko realizes that Nami really cares for the gang Nojiko finds Luffy and the others outside of the village and tells them their story She and Nami were brought up by and ex Marine named Bellemere who grew up in Kokoyashi Village After a brutal battle Bellemere close to death woke up to find a three year old Nojiko carrying a baby Nami Bellemere asked her if it was her sister and Nojiko replied No look she s laughing she doesn t know anything at all Heehee To this Bellemere decided that she had to live and raise the children as her own Nami and Nojiko lived with Bellemere in a modest house at an orange farm for ten years of happiness They did not have any real riches but they had each other Nami somewhat resented the fact that they didn t have much money simply because she wished she didn t have to wear hand me downs and also because she wished Bellemere could buy nice things for herself and not worry about the children Unfortunately at this time the Arlong Pirates raided the village and imposed the tax on the people They ordered the people to pay 100 000 Beli for adults and 50 000 Beli for each child in the home Of course Bellemere in her financial situation could never afford this high rate The village doctor told the children who were in the village not to go home since it would be the only way to save Bellemere s life However Bellemere s pride won out and even though she only had 100 000 Beli she told Arlong that it was the payment for her two children and not for her Arlong accepted her offer and shot her dead with Nami and Nojiko witnessing the entire event Arlong s pirates invaded their home and found Nami s maps she was always interested in maps and navigation so an interested Arlong took her with him Nami came back to the village money in tow and told the villagers that she was now working for Arlong and he was going to pay her a lot of money to do it He even branded her with his group s tattoo Nojiko was furious as well as the other villagers They told her never to come back to town Nojiko follows Nami to Bellemere s grave and it is here that Nami reveals to Nojiko about her one hundred million beli agreement with Arlong and how she ll fight alone to reach this goal However pirates are not always known for their honesty and Arlong breaks his trust to Nami by telling the Marines where she has buried her treasure Since most of her savings are stolen goods from pirates no less L the Marines confiscate them Nami realizes that Arlong has betrayed her and confronts him to
