  1. 5
  2. My 401(k) offers 5 mutual funds we can invest in. I invest in all 5 just so I can be diversified. Just make sure that you have a nice balance and you should be able to follow the general trends of the market.
  3. Put no more than 5% of your portfolio in any single name. To put more than that into a single name (stocks) goes against the most conservative modern portfolio theory.... If you are going into mutual funds, you will by definition have the diversity you need.
  4. First it depends on your definition of Securities. If you mean specific equity positions meaning individual stocks many references say no more than 12-18 positions as this number is somewhat easy to track/follow. If you mean mutual funds than you needn't be worried about specific equity positions. Fidelity.com has a very good retirement planner that'll help you allocate assets across various of their funds based upon your risk tolerance. In fact several of the larger fund families have the same tool(s) as Fidelity--they were just the one that came to mind. If you want to invest across fund families find a good FINANCIAL PLANNER and have him/her assist you in fund selection. Hope I've helped and best of luck in your new career!!!
