I just got a company blackberry that I use a lot, should I cancel my personal cell phone?

It seems pointless to have 2 phones and I work for a pretty big company. Cancelling my phone will save me money every month, any advice??

  1. Yep just cancel it, you will find that you use your blackberry more often is not all the time where you wont use your personal cell phone at all. Why pay for your personal phone when you will never use it anyway!!
  2. NO. Any communication (voice, email, data, etc) on company property is subject to interception, recording, etc. Perfectly legal. If you ever want to have privacy, you need your own phone.
  3. Short and Simple answer--- Don't do it. You would be surprised what company I.T Geeks see, on a daily basis. Save yourself the frustration. Keep your personal Cell personal!
  4. No, you should keep your personal and professional phones and 'business' separate. Aside from the privacy issues that the previous poster listed as every number you dial is listed on the cell phone bill (and can be called back at any time), it could come back to haunt you. Some of the larger companies are actually 'more strict' with usage and have software programs that monitor bills in the background and if your output doesn't equal the value you bring to the company or if you use your phone substantially more than others who work at a same level with you (or even your boss), they can ultimately bill you overcalls fee at .40/min or switch the BlackBerry to email service only and remove the cellular service because of abuse. If it is inconvenient to carry 2 phones you should leave your personal phone at home during work hours, minimize your personal calls during the day and keep it for use during nights and weekends. Then afterhours try not to use your BlackBerry during personal time :) Additionally, you can ask the person who issued the BlackBerry to you if there is a preferred protocol, i.e. can you have a flat fee i.e $20 a month deducted from your check to cover personal calls or what do they advise. Lastly, with the old adage, hope for the best and prepare for the worst, remember that if you give out your corporate cell phone number to everyone what would happen if you decided to switch jobs, got let go unexpectedly because of downsizing or got into a dispute of some sort with your company and left on not so good terms. As unfortunate as it may seem, you can't rule it out. What an inconvenience it would be trying to reach all those people and give them a new number.
  5. No. You want a back up phone "just in case." You should, however look to reducing your personal phone's rate plan to the lowest possible -- and be sure that you're selecting a Non-Promotional plan so that your contract is not being extended.
