Do I have to retire to draw the half of my husbands S.S. that I was awarded in a divorce?
We have been divorced for 3 years and he can retire, but says I have to retire to get my half and I will not be able to draw my S.S. in an amount that I can live on. Is this a true statement, that I have to retire in order to draw if it was awarded to me in a divorce.

- Social Security is not enough for any one to live on and you want half of his. How is he going to survive?
- Cal the Social Security office.
- The way it was explained to me was you add the two together. Say one gets $1000 and the other gets $600. The total would be $1600. Divide that by 2. Each person would get $800 when it is time to collect.
