Should the music industry retire certain songs?
It is my opinion that it is a huge disgrace to let female pop singers or punk bands (or anyone in that matter) to cover truly classic songs. I believe that the music industry should retire Songs so that no one can ever remake them and keep them in thier original format to truly make them classic. Tell me what song you think should be retired so no one else can ruin it ever?

- It's the original artist's choice who can cover their songs. If they decide to sell out, then they deserve to have their songs disgraced.
- Unfortunatly, the music business, in this case music publishing, just doesn't work that way. We'd all like to believe that artist make music for the art, and some, if not most do. However, you must understand that the "music industry" is a money driven business. Theres no charity, it isn't "not-for-profit". What does all this mean? Simply put, a artist with a truly classic song didn't make that song to simply be a classic. They made it because classic songs make money, and they do so for years. The owners of the songs decide rather or not the songs may be covered, and this may or may not be the orgional writer or the performer of the song. In most cases huge publishing companies own these rights, the rights the make money off music, and one of the ways thats done is granting the right for the song to be covered. But you may say to yourself "I know my favorite artist or even the publishing company would never allow this crapy ass band to cover this song!!!" Fortunatly for the crapy ass band there something called a compulsory License. Once a song has been release to the public, the laws state that anyone can cover that song, provided they give writen notice to the copyright owner, pay the proper fees, and jump through a bunch of other hoops the government has set in place. After that, the song can be covered, rather the original artist agrees or not So...with all that said, there are times when you simply can't stop a train wreck from happening...
