1. Half a million is probably more than enough.
2. Personally, I don't think I will live that long. So I only put in about 10% of my income. I have set myself up to have rental income. So im hoping by the time I retire all my mortgage will be paid and I will have rental income to keep me floating. I do plan on getting a part-time job just to keep me busy. Also I would like to have a RV and just travel around in it.
3. At least a million dollars (in today's money, that doesn't count inflation over the next few decades). I'd suggest retiring to a more rural community. Good reading: "The Automatic Millionaire" by David Bach. Everything you need to know about how to save money for a decent retirement.
4. I think I have already answered this. If you are more affluent, you need more money than somebody who is not.
