retirement oz

Better to retire young happy and poor, or old miserable and with money?

I am vested in my retirement program. I can retire in a couple years with minimal money to get by on, or I can remain in a career that is sucking the life and soul right out of me, and have good money during my retired years. Which do you think is better?

  1. Retire. Start bartending or cutting lawns or something that doesn't require a high level of stress but keeps you busy to suplement your income (if money motivates you to do this). Or, live poor and paint or something. Your life is a lot more important than the money you make and your happiness is what will make it matter.
  2. If in 5 years your going to look back and wish that you had taken the extra time to get your full pension, you may regret it. I recommend becoming the pure definition of laziness. Think "Office Space". Don't let the newbies know how good you used to be . And to finish it off, go on a nice long paid sabatical. But don't just retire early out of haste.
  3. find a middle ground. look for another way to earn a living that works for you. maybe a part time job similar to what you do now, but with less time at it. or can you be self employed in that line of work. if that won't work for you i would choose the happy method. i retired youngish, happy and not poor. smile.
