Creative Ideas Needed?

Im doing a 3 week long lesson based on Music with my three year old class. I have many ideas already, but I always like to have more than enough just in case some aren't well liked by the children. Any creative ideas for activities dealing with music? (Any thing that would enhance the learning of colors, shapes, numbers, and/or letters would be great) Thanks in advance!

  1. Color the keys on a key board and have the colors correspond to the notes of a song. Wish i had more ideas but hope that helps.
  2. rhythm sticks are fun the could use them to count out the beat of the alphabet song. Sing a song like if you name is billy please stand up or if you are wearing blue please stand up.
  3. Kind of simple, but I like this one :) A Variation on musical Chairs: No child likes getting out. This game eliminates this problem as well as encouraging name recognition. Set up the chairs as in a normal game of musical chairs, but fix each child's name card on a chair with blue tack so they can see it. Start the music with the children moving around the chairs. When it stops they must find the chair with their name on it. Move the names each turn ( you may need the help of your aide to do this speedily). For beginners add an individual sticker on the name card to aid recognition. My kids loooove this game!!! Have fun trying it with yours.
  4. you can do the owl sounds game...you take those film cannisters and you fill two each with say two of them with two pieces of rice, then you close it up, then two of them with two little pebbles, close that up, then two of them with three beans, and so forth..say until you have twelve or an even number of each...then you mix them up,and ask each child to pick one out of the box...then you have them go around the room, shaking the cannisters, and trying to tell which "sound" matches their sound! It is a lot of fun! Kids love this game...I did this a while back with my preschoolers! Also, you can do cultural music,(put on different music tapes, with different types of music...and have the children dance to the music...from classical, to salsa, to african-cuban, to Japanese, etc...variations are if you were to play freeze dance (on and off with the music) etc... get fun and be creative! you can also do instrument groups...with the kids passing out drums, and other instruments..and always exchanging the instruments so that each child gets a turn with a different instrument..also teaching some of them to use their hands for clapping or fingers for snapping(if they can, or if they can whistle, encouraging this is great as well!) If you know how to play the piano or guitar or any other type of instrument...bring that in as well! I play both piano and guitar, as well as tin whistle, recorder, and harmonica* of which I am still learning! LOL!) but, try that too! You can also bring in musical guests....! also, there is the musical spots...where you put down colored spots on the floor, and then tell the kids to dance, then when the music ends...they have to find a spot! also, you can use different sounding bells! or drums, or other instruments..to show sounds.... you can also have them listen very carefully to different types of music..and stop the music..and ask them what it sounded like to them...etc... Singing If you're happy and you know it, twinkle twinkle, and the alphabet song, songs in general,...also you can do sounds and rhythms...where they make sounds with their bodies.,feet,.and tongues...etc....that is a lot of fun as well! Have them make(water) bottle shakers...have them put in beads ,sand, or whatever and then glue the lids tight..and let them dry..add ribbons to the bottles...and also, they can use sticks with the water bottles, to rub on the outside of the plastic bottles that have the ridges ! They make great sounds as well! Look in the library, and always ask others for some nifty ideas! There is a lot of great stuff that you can do, with kids! also, parachutes with music, is fun...and bouncing a ball to the sound of music too! etc... Hokey pokey, and here we go around the mulberry bush, and pop goes the weasel!, and She'll be comin' around the mountain when she comes, etc.... Good luck, and have fun!
  5. Watch Barney.
