retirement oz

Is there a corrolation between retiring and death?

Not just in the sense that a person who retires is generally old, but as in the sense that retiring removes a large portion of a persons focus on life.

  1. It certainly seems so. I think a person needs a sense of purpose in their lives otherwise they lose the will to live. So for many once the 9 to 5 is gone so is the purpose. Very sad.
  2. I think it has something more to do with passion and need to be driven. If you've worked for 45 years of your life and you retire you've given up a big part of your life. Having worked for so long you've devloped a passion for working, and gotten accustomed to being "needed" at work. Once you stop working those things don't exist anymore and if you don't find another passion or drive and motivation from another source you are left with a void. Same thing for couples that have been married for 50 years and one dies and then a short time later the other does. Think of it as someone taking away your car. It's been your tranpsortation for quite sometime, and you've relied on it heavily for so long and then poof it's not there anymore. You'd either have to find other forms of transporation or you'd end up losing your job, and turning into a hermit.
