- I live part time in the central part of Mexico, outside of Guadalajara on the shores of Lake Chapala. There is a large Canadian population down here. However to live comfortably in Mexico requires at least $600 US a month (for one person), less if you own your own home. Taxes and labor are cheap, food is about the same as in the US and utility costs, gasoline and cooking gas are expensive. Dental, medical care and drugs are affordable. If you want to rent a very small house in a Mexican neighborhood, you would have to pay about $300 - $500 US. In a fancier neghborhood, you would be looking at least $500 US a month, most likely more. You can buy small houses for under $100,000 US and mortgages are just starting to become available. I would suggest you rent for a few months to see if you can get by. The rainy season, from June through October, has the most pleasant weather, rain is generally showers at night and everything is in bloom.
- Your money will last, however, for how long do you think you would stand the arrogance of the population. I once lived for two years in another Latin/Hispanic country and like all the other expats around me, before or after one year life was unbearable. Remember you are going into another lifestyle with very different attitudes. Remember my words....hasta luego
