Is the public mental health system in Mexico any good?

Hello, my older brother is a paranoid-schizophrenic. I'm his caregiver. We live together and plan to stay together. We're looking into moving to a southern state to retire. What about Mexico, as long as we're looking? Is their public mental health system any good? What will it cost, since my brother's not a Mexican citizen? Do they have ACT programs? Is the system bilinqual?

  1. It depends where in Mexico. In Guadalajara there are some excellent health facilities that cater to American ex-patriots. Their health and mental health care is equal to what can be found in the United States. Other parts of Mexico are not quite as fortunate and seriously lacking in quality care. You need to research this VERY carefully before making your decision. Just as an aside, I live in a southern state and am retired. I am about 1/2 hour from the Mexican border. I go there to get my prescription medications. The cost about 1/10 of what I would pay here. I know there is a lot of argument about the quality of medication from Mexico but I have never had any problem with any of them. Another thing to remember, even if a "system" is bilingual, the general population may not be so it would be in your best interest to learn enough spanish to get by if you decide to move to Mexico.
