Philippines retirement question?

How much money should one have if they were to retire in the Philippines?

  1. That will depend on how many relathieves you will support. I know people who have been there for years on $1200/month. I also know some who sold everything and went there with plenty only to have the marrow sucked from their bones and returned broke. Just be careful.
  2. Depends on your desired standard of living and if you have a retirement check or just savings. I know people who live on an $800-$900 SSI check but I would not recommend it if you have medical problems. To date there is no Medicaid/Medicare facilities available ( although some physicians are trying to establish one in Manila)....There is an excellent VA Clinic in Manila. For the most part it is much easier to live well in the Philippines on limited funds than it is in America......and from the number of other nation expatriates here ,probably better than most countries. Logically the most expensive items are those that are imported. FOOD: I can live a month on what it cost me a week in the US....UTILITIES: I pay $100 for all my utilities which include cable and internet. ENTERTAINMENT: A movie ticket is around $2
  3. If you have $500 in the Philippines you will be having a good standard of living specially if you are not paying a rent. But that amount that will not be enough if you leave in the city.
