advice for teaching overseas. where do I start?

I'm in high school. I love foreign languages and I want to move to Europe. So I thought that I could become a teacher overseas for english as a second language. Preferably in Germanic or Spanish areas. But could anyone with experience give me some advice? Would majoring in teaching and minoring in spanish and/or german be a good enough degree? Are teaching jobs in demand? Do they pay better or worse than here?

  1. This may not seem like the answer that you are looking for, but with a degree of some sort the peace corps has oppertunities in Europe, Asia, and Africa teaching ESL.
  2. A bachelor's degree in just about anything will open up a lot of doors for you to teach overseas. Knowing the language of the country you wish to go to will be an added bonus. Having your teaching degree will help YOU immensely (I cannot stress this enough), but it is really not necessary for most EFL teaching jobs overseas. Having TEFL certification under your belt will help with many, though not all, overseas opportunities. Go to http://www.tefl.net/ to find out more. How much they pay will entirely depend on where you go and whether you teach in private schools or the public school system. Chances are, it will be comparable or slightly less than here. It could be significantly less in the beginning. If you have a degree, you present yourself well, you speak English clearly and you understand the native language, you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a job. Teaching english overseas is a really exciting and rewarding experience. I wish you the best of luck!
