Is retiring a good thing i`m 56 ? so many of my mates who have have gone to seed early.?

2. I think as long as you are financially prepared for it and you have plans to keep yourself occupied then yes, go for it. But if you plan to just sit around and watch yourself get older in the TV's reflection... I'd keep working. :o) Maybe you could get a part time job or line up some volunteer work to keep you mentally and physically active. That way you will live longer and stay happier. Good luck!
