  1. You have a DD-214. It lists your total years of service. Use that.
  2. A copy of your DD-214 will show the length of your service. It will also show your reason for separation from active duty. If the separation was not due to a military-related physical problem, and since your active duty was about 5 years, that would... or should.... indicate to anybody that you are not eligible for any military retirement benefits. I believe that if your reason for separation was do to an injury incurred in the service, your medical records would state somewhere the reason for your separation and whether or not you were eligible for any medical retirement benefits. Failing that, I'd contact the bureau of personnel for your service. Explain your situation and I'm certain they'll help you out. How do you find the bureau of personnel? www.army.mil, www.navy.mil, www.af.mlil... whatever service. Those sites should have links to that for which you seek.
