consequences for shoplifting overseas?
we're living overseas in okinawa, japan right now. i am 16 and for some stupid reason stole two shirts off base and was caught. i was taken to the japanese police and then the military police station. we are not in the military but my dad is a contractor and we just got here a couple monthes ago. he was saying that possibly they could not renew his letter to be here or possibly get kicked off the island. is this true? i've never before been in trouble and i have no idea what to expect. imreally nervous.

- Sorry to hear about your lapse in thought. I'm not sure how this will play. In the military, members are covered by the SOFA Agreement. As the son of a contractor, it could very well still fall within those guidelines. Be glad you're not in the middle east. In places like the UAE, if they catch you in the act, they remove the offending hand right there on the spot. No questions asked. Good luck.
- As a general rule punishment for crimes that a relatively minor in the US are much more severe in foreign countries. Being asked to leave is the least of your worries. many Asian countries still use corporal punishment or extended prison time.(corporal=beatings) Never, ever commit a crime in a foreign country! While over here the court are likely to say that such an act as shoplifting is a youthful indiscretion Asian countries tend not to be so forgiving. Good luck your going to need it.
- Yeah, that can happen. They have that right. Had you done the shop- lifting in China - they just cut off your hands.
