If Yanks get Santana, will they tell Pettitte to retire?
They would have no place for him in the rotation Santana - Wang - Hughes - Chamberlain - Mussina

- So then you think Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy are full time big leaguers ready to go out and pitch 30 games? Phil Hughes is the one I would trust if you had to pick one. Here's what my rotation would look like: 1--> Johan Santana 2--> Chien Ming Wang (sp...?) 3--> Andy Pettite 4--> JobaChamberlain 5--> Phil Hughes I' have Ian Kennedy come out of the pen and do some long relief pitching till he's a bit more seasoned. Now, Moose (Mike Mussina) is a problem. I don't know if a pitcher like him will take kindly to being put into the pen because that where he's destined unless the youngsters don't cut it. I'd put Joba at 4th simply because he needs to get the feel for pitching long innings again. Not 1 or 2 in relief. Also, he hasn't proven himself at the starter level like Johan, Wang, Petitte. But, then again if the Yanks are going to get Johan they'll have to part with some prospects...namely pitchers. They could deal Ian Kennedy...but that's a long shot. I'd let him go over Phil and Joba.
- How do you figure that? Santana, Pettitte, Wang, Hughes, Chamberlain. Mussina & Kennedy would be in the bullpen most likely. It's going to be an interesting spring training.
- Arab is right. If they get Santana, they will ask Pettitte to resign because you dont expect a rookie to be a full time pitcher.
- When you have young pitchers like Joba Chamberlain, Ian Kennedy and Phil Hughes you want all the veteran leadership you can get. Andy Pettite is the guy with the rings and the postseason experience who could easily provide that. Plus, Ian Kennedy and Phil Hughes could always use a little more seasoning (minors or bullpen). And though its extremely slight, there is always the chance that Joba could go back to the bullpen.
- Fact: If they trade for Santana, the Twins will ask for either Phil Hughes or Joba Chamberlain along with Ian Kennedy and Melky Cabrera. I they then signed Andy, they would have a five man rotation of 1. Santana, 2. Wang, 3. Pettite, 4. Hughes/Chamberlain, and 5. Mussina. The yankees have more chance signing Andy Pettite than trading some of their best young quick players like Melky Cabrera for Johan Santana. I am not over estimating Johan's potential and I know he can be a great thing. It's true. However, as odd as it sounds, Johan is beyond the yankees reach at this time.
- They wont get santana i assure u,so your point is moot.
- Joba might be moved closer, if Rivera goes away, then Pettitte can stay.
- no... i would rather have Pettite and put moose in the pen. Santana Pettite Wang Joba Huges = 2008 World Series Champions
- I think Mussina days are over for him as a Yankee.Pettitte has proved he can still pitch good.Moose would be better off with another team who needs a veteran starter.Trade him to Tampa Bay!
- First if they acquire Santana they will have to give up some of their young arms so there would be room for Pettite
- Aside from the fact they won't have all those young pitchers if they got Santana, there is no way the Yankees would put Mussina in the rotation ahead of Pettitte.
- Honestly, they can get both Santana and Pettitte, put Joba or Kennedy in relief, and have a great rotation. Also they could go after Blanton or Haren. Livan Hernandez could be a possibility since they need a guy who can pitch more than 4-5 innings. The Yanks might even show interest in Mark Redman who could help.
- no no no absolutely not yes they will have a deep rotation but Pettite is definetly one of the top ones
- Cashman and Girardi have stated over and over that they want Pettitte back no matter what. They would have room, as Joba could stay in the set up role he excelled in this year.
- Well here if they get Santana which i hope not but i don't want to trade prospects but here the rotation Wang, Santana, Hughes and Chamberlain and Pettitte
- i would never personally ask pettitte to retire.. he's a great pitcher... he is the guy to put in after a tough loss.... think about how many wins he got after yankee losses. there would be a place for him the in lineup....IF 1. we trade hughes for santana...(which is very possible) heres a question... IF, we trade kennedy instead of hughes..would you rather have phil or andy in the rotation?....ANDY BY FAR! here is the best rotation ever! and possible ours next year. 1. Johan Santana 2. Chien-Ming Wang 3. Joba "the hut" Chamberlain 4. Andy Pettitte 5. Mike Mussina (and it was never against the law to have a six-man rotation)
