Boxer Dog Game ideas??
As its getting closer towards winter i realise im not going to be able to take my Boxer dog out as much as i used to but was just wondering if anyone has any ideas on games to play or just general ideas to keep him entertained and a bit active in the house and garden. Ive tried hide and seek, but he wouldnt stay sat down, ive tried the hiding the treats but he gets bored after 1 or 2 and ive tried the game where you get the dog to pick up his toys 1 by 1 off the floor and you give him a treat but once he saw treats he didnt want his toys! Ive been on a few websites that do say certain games you shouldnt play with boxers anyway like tug of war, etc. So im just looking to see if anyone has any ideas or suggestions to keep a bored boxer entertained!!!!! - You've pretty much nixed most of my ideas for keeping my own dogs entertained.. I also play fetch in my house. We have a rather long hall. It isn't much of a run for a big dog but it does fairly well for days when the weather is too bad to spend the day outside.
- I don't know who is telling you not to play tug with a Boxer, but that is not correct. We use tug as reward in my obedience class and my fellow classmate has a Boxer she tugs with all the time. If you train your dog to give on command, it makes tug time more enjoyable. As for in the house stuff... I would suggest working on basic obedience, which most dogs enjoy the mental stimulation. And you can work on scent articles too. My friend with the Boxer has been doing that and he loves it. See about getting in with an experienced obedience instructor and go for advanced obedience. It's lots of fun to do and great if you get around to doing a few trials and earn titles!
- On rainy days we stuff kongs with kibble and peanutbutter. We play "which hand" with treats. We do "puppy pushups" (down, sit, stand, down, stand, sit... etc.) with lots of treats to keep the interest. We choose a new trick to work on or work on an old one... like "touch" or "play possum". We do play tug, and i have a friend with a boxer who does play tug. There are rules to it however. I am trying to remember them all: 1) tug is only initiated by the human. Tug toys are put away when not in play. 2) teeth on skin or serious growling makes the toys go away for at least 30 minutes. 3) tone is kept easy as not to get the pup too worked up. 4) human wins majority of the time... even if it means dropping a treat on the floor to distract the pup. 5)when the human says "All Done" in a happy tone, the game is over. 6)work on "give it" or "drop it" before engaging in tug. Hope this helps. Besto of luck.
- I play hide and seek with mine
- Belive it or not we wrestle, I know how hard it is to believe that a Boxer has enough energy, but mine does. And before you know it i am huffing and puffing and he is just then ready to go. We use his Kong with Peanut Butter and hide it in different parts of the house. Then we use the come command and when he gets in the correct room, he can start sniffing it out. We also do the fetch with a tug bone (not sure if that the real name but its a bone shapped braided rope). Then we chase him as he chases the cats and runs with things he knows he shouldnt have. Like hangers, holiday decorations, shoes..... Hope this helps, if not it should at least put you mind at ease knowing that you are not alone with your puppy problems.....
- I have a funny kind of game that requires no contact! My male boxer loves to play with a laser light! Yep just a cheap key chain laser. He will chase it for as long as I do it and it wears him out and the the best part ,I don't have to get hurt by rough housing! Hope this helps.
