retirement oz

Can I still claim some of the basic UK pension if I work in the UK for a few years but retire abroad?

I am a British citizen who has just started a new job in London after graduating from university. I plan to go to Hong Kong to work and retire there in 3 years' time. I would like to know if I am still entitled to any UK state pension for these few years when I will be working in the UK. Further, if I join a company pension scheme, would it be pointless as I am not retiring in the UK anyway? Thank you.

  1. I think the chances are very highly unlikely, If I were you I would speak with the DWP to be sure. Thanks ever so much and best of luck :) If you add your age I may be able to help more.
  2. my aunt moved back to Ireland after living in the UK for 30 years, and is claiming her UK pension here....don't know if that answers your question, Most company pension schemes are outsourced to international companies, so it is worth checking out who yours are. And if it isn't out sourced, you can always take the money out of the scheme when you leave. It's a good way to save, as most companies add money to the pensions, and it also reduces the tax you pay
  3. Yes, you can receive your UK state pension, although it won't be uprated once in payment as there is no social security arrangement between the UK and Hong Kong. If you join a UK pension scheme, you can still derive benefit from membership. This could be either a pension from the scheme paid to you in Hong Kong, or you could transfer the benefits built up to what the UK Revenue snappily describes as a QROPS ('qualifying recognised overseas pension scheme'). 4. Write to the DWP, specify what you require ,.info will be sent to you.Doing it this way is better than asking around , each situation is usually completely different.
  5. Your UK state pension can be paid to where ever you live if you are entitled to receive it at all. Re The private pension scheme. All you can do is check the policy before signing. I can see no reason why you can not receive this abroad because if DWP can manage it then so can anyone. But as it is a private company involved.....Just ASK first
