retirement oz

Do you get US social security benefits for life once you retire?

I'm not American but am a permanent resident and married to an American; since I started working here, SS deductions have been taken from my paycheck, which I have no problem with. My question is this: upon reaching the age of retirement, will the SSA pay me benefits until I die (even if I should live 200 years), or only for a certain period of time? Does that depend on the circumstances? If so, what determines that? I couldn't find a straight answer to that on www.ssa.gov. I heard that my wife's grandparents will stop getting benefits at the end of this year or the next and would have to sell their house and become dependents of one or the other of their daughters. I find that rather depressing and so was wondering about my own situation come the time of my own retirement. When answering, please assume the US social security system will survive forever; I am simply asking a theoretical question. Thank you!

  1. Yes, you will. For more information, go to ssa.gov. And your Wife's grandparents will to. Someone is confused.
  2. As far as I know, the benefits last forever. I have never heard of anything like what is happening to your wife's grand parents.
