- When it comes to money, the most important thing to have is discipline. We live in a hedonist society, in which is easy to get whatever we want, whenever we want. And if we don't have the money, we just charge it to a credit card. Once you set yourself to be disciplined, then think of your savings as lost money. This has helped me understand that I cannot touch the money for anything that it pre-planned purpose. Some people disagree with me and would touch the money if there is an emergency. Emergency to me is a life or death situation and most of us have medical insurance, anything else is not an emergency. So far... discipline and think of it as lost money. Then, put the money in an account that is not easily accessible like an online savings account, like HSBC. This way you are less likely to touch the money. Then, when you get paid, pay yourself first. For example, if your bills are around $800 per month and You make $1000, try to save $150 to $200 and put it in your savings account and try to survive with the rest. This will force you to live on less money and you will figure out a way to suppress your expenses. You don't need a premium package for our cell phone, satellite, or need to pay for DVD rentals with NetFlix or Bluckbuster. Getting rid of these will allow you to get more funds and your savings will skyrocket. So, in brief: Be Discipline; Think of it as Lost Money; Online Savings Account; Pay Yourself First; and Cut the Non-Sense services. Good luck.
- Make it automatic! Arrange with your bank or employer to deduct a certain percentage or certain dollar amount out of each check and have it deposited in a separate account BEFORE YOU EVEN CASH IT.
- I like what "J. Jude" said. You'll be surprised at just how fast it'll add up.
