  1. Put it in the bank and don't spend it, especially on frivolous things that you don't need.
  2. I found that direct deposit of a certain amount into a savings account works well for me! I don't see the money as it is taken directly out of my paycheck. It works great...
  3. open a isa account or maybe a fixed rate bond for 1 0r 2 years. That way you can put the money away but not touch it for a set time span.
  4. Start with your change. Every night empty your change into a jar and add $1 to it. At the end of the week count it up and deposit it. It won't be much to start with but you won't miss it. If you can, have a small amount automatically transfered from your checking to your saving each week or every time you get paid. That way you won't have it to spend. If you get a tax refund, put at least 50% of it in your savings account right away. Promise yourself if you get a raise that 50% will be automatically transferred into a savings account right from your paycheck. Once money is in savings, its much easier not to spend it. Also try joining an online club that celebrates saving. I like America Saves. That will give you more ideas and help and also help you celebrate your successes. Some chapters even offer a free session with a financial planner. Good luck and have fun.
  5. Im a shop-a-holic-scrooge so I know what you mean. I love to spend but i also love to see my money grow and play with it just like in that Duck tales cartoon where the Scrooge when swimming in his vault of gold coins. II have 3 accounts which I drop off money weekly. I hate going to the bank so I never withdrawl from the accounts that are far away and it also helps to destroy the card when you get it. All I have access to is my checking account which i use to pay bills only. I never spend my tax refunds and if I do its only a couple hundred just to get it out of my system. I;ve never lived outside of my means so I think thats what helps me save alot especially after promotions and such. You just gotta do what works for you. You never know when a few extra bucks will come in handy.
  6. I'm terrible at staying on a budget, but its the only way. I remember when my dad showed me once how he handles his budgeting and accounting, he grinned and said 'don't worry, you only have to do this for the rest of your life'. It doesn't matter how much you earn, if you don't pay attention, you'll spend all of it and more! There are two parts to a 'budget'. One is making the budget. The second is tracking all expenses at the end of the month, and assessing where you are. If you are not staying within budget, you either need to adjust the budget (perhaps cutting some other things) or cut spending in those areas. Make saving part of your budget. As others have suggested, an automatic withdrawal from your bank account into some sort of savings product is a good idea.
  7. ah, I am pretty thrifty when it comes down to it, I think! lol! don't buy coffee every day, make a pot at home, buy a pot if needed... don't buy a bottle of soda every day... but 12 cans, it's cheaper! same w/ bottled water, buy it by the case! join freecycle.org, it's a site in the USA (sometimes over seas, too!) but, it's a site to give away and get free stuff! find someone who cuts hair at home, cheaper than the salon! get a cut that lasts for months... shop at the dollar store for staples and paper products, use coupons from Sunday's paper, shop at Aldi's or Save a lot for food, don't eat out more than once a month, don't do fast food, cook at home! if you smoke, cut down! no more booze... cut down on the make-up, don't get your nails done, do those yourself... oh, I could go on! shop around for car insurance... don't pay people to do things for you, do them yourself if you can! I hope this helps, perhaps you should cut down on spending, so you can save... don't buy more than 1 outfit for each season brand new... wash your own car for a buck or 2 or wash it at your house, when it's not cold that is, lol! eat more tuna, it's cheap, haha! turn out the lights when you are not in the room, turn down the heat a degree or 2, put on a sweater or sweatshirt instead, use bill pay from your bank so you don't use stamps that saves money, if you bank does it for free =)
  8. My husband and I have read and followed many of the guidelines of Dave Ramsey - which had really worked well for us. One thing we do is live on a cash system. We put an amount in an envelope each pay day for groceries, gas, etc. We each keep out X amount in cash for incidentals. We do not use our debit or credit cards, unless we discuss the purchase. At first it was hard, but then once we got used to it things were fine. For example - I take X amount in cash to the grocery store....and I take a calculator with me and keep a somewhat running total so that I know I won't go over. What ever is left gets put back in that envelope in case I have to get more milk or forgot an ingredient. Any cash left in any envelope at the end of the week gets put into savings and we start fresh each Saturday. We also both have a set amount of money direct deposited directly from our paychecks into a savings account in a bank that we don't go to very often. (Out of the way, across town, no debit cards to the account.) The first check or two I missed the money ~ now I don't. That nest egg has grown substantially over the past year and we don't even think of it as savings because we have never seen the money. You will always have to be on a budget - that's just reality. If you don't allot your money and control your spending you will never get anywhere.
