retirement?

I am looking into taking my pension to live in a completely different part of the world, at least for a while....quiet life by the sea sort of thing...try to fit in without being a problem...I live in the country in the US...does anyone have any info on doing that sort of thing in Ireland I'm talking about maybe a year to see how things go...I've been living spartan and saving...just looking for a very small town and wondering about expenses and such...eat at the local pub, walk about...nothing tourist like

  1. very broad question, wanting to have a quiet life etc no probs here in ireland, fitting in no probs either as ireland is much more multicultural in recent times witn he opening up of eastern europe depending what your looking for its hard to advise any further than that but well be glad to see you if you do decide to come cead mille failte
  2. Can you speak gaelic. Thats important in many parts as civilisation has moved slowly. In dublin you would be ok probably for most of the time.
  3. You wouldn't have too much of a problem finding a quiet place to live. Bear in mind that it is a very expensive country though, and it's also a very modern country, unlike the image some people from the US have of it (no offence to you!). Try http://www.daft.ie for properties for sale or rent, and http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/moving-country/moving-to-ireland for information on moving to Ireland. Also, everyone speaks English, so you will have no language problems no matter where you are in the country.
  4. Yes, but your dollar is not really worth a lot here at the moment .... wait a few years first.
  5. in general coastal ireland can be expensive to live in and very touristy. i would recommend maybe co. waterford, dunmore east is a fantastic little vilage right on the sea. its close to waterford city and all amenities. this in eastern ireland (south east to be exact) which generally has warmer seasons then the western coast of ireland. the western coast is where al of the ships carrying immigrants to america set out from and is more touristy and expensive, although very beautiful, it can be very remote. thats why id opt for the south east of ireland. my home county kilkenny is a great option also rental starts at approx €650/ €700. try www.daft.ie or www.myhome.ie .... the counties you have to choose from in south east ireland are waterford and wexford (coastal) and kilkenny, carlow (inland) and if you want to check out the countys of the west coast search through the following cork, mayo, limerick, clare, donegal or galway (cork and galway being the best for infrastructure and amenities) hope it helps
