Overseas Screening question!?
My husband is in the US Navy. He recently requested and was approved for an overseas billet to Rota, Spain. My nine month old son and I are now required to undergo an overseas screening. What do we have to do? What could force us to fail the screening? My son is 100% healthy and is seen regularly by a pediatrician, but he is behind in his immunizations b/c everytime he's up for them, he has a cold. Could that affect us? I fully intend on getting my son up to date on his shots before we go to Spain! My pediatrician already explained that each shot needs to be AT LEAST six weeks apart, so we have plenty of time!

- Very little would result in a failing grade, you'd have to have a communicable disease (of the dangerous kind) Everyone gets the common cold, so no, that wont be a factor. Don't worry, you'll breeze through it :-) it's just a formality. Check your blood pressure, height, weight, and so on. You'll kick yourself for worrying after it's done. Immunization you can get done all over the world. Just keep your book with you and see the doctors once you get to Spain. (And you will get there!)
- Yep the lovely EFMP screening. They just want to make sure that neither one of you have any special needs that would need to be taken care of while you are overseas. If so then they need to make sure that the base you are assigned can handle that problem. As long as you both are healthly, I see no problem why either one would fail. They do this to everyone who is going overseas. I would get his immunizations up to date though. good luck and have fun while there. Don't get caught up in the "stay on base attitude". Get out and explore what is around you.
- Spain was pretty safe when I visited it 17 years ago. Apparently the European Union has also done much for its economy since then. I would suggest getting up to date on your son's shots. One IMPORTANT thing to know is whether or not the water is safe to drink. (That includes brushing teeth with it.) One nasty memory of travelling is having blasting diarrhea because of the water. If you don't know, use bottled water. This includes restaurants.
- The Navy screening is done differently than the other branches, it isn't considered a EFMP screening, that is totally separate and has nothing to do with going overseas. Unless the closest base to you is a Army base then you need to speak to the MTF about this. You will need to fill out a set # of forms, you fill it out with all the necessary information on it. This will include getting a dental screening done by a civilian dentist and have it signed by him. This is to make sure no major work needs to be done on your teeth within the next 12 months. So if you need teeth pulled or cavities filled it generally needs to be done before they will allow you to go. It will also need to be done on your son, even though he is still a baby. The best way to get the forms is to go to the following site: http://www-nmcsd.med.navy.mil/service/services_view.cfm?csid=53#doclibrary and print them from there. The contact information though isn't right unless you are in the San Diego area. You will need a physical done on yourself including a pap test within the past 12 months. If you see a civilian doctor, get a copy of your records & take them with you. Your son will need one as well which is general for this age. For immuizations it can depend on what country you are going to, to what is required. You should check out and find out if you need any yourself. Call the MTF closest to you and talk to someone in the Overseas Screening area, they will need to set up an appointment for you to come in with all your records to the interview. It shouldn't take very long at all. They will go over the records, say yeah or nay and the forms will go into your file. As soon as you are cleared for OCONUS assignment get your No-Fee Passports through the PSD. You will need 2 pictures of each of you, along with both your birth certificates. When you file for your child both parents need to be there. You should also consider getting a Tourist passport for each of you as well. The reason being you can only use the No-Fee when you are on orders, other times when you are visiting countries for vacations you need to use a Tourist Passport. You will not get the No-Fee until he has checked out of his current command and you are getting ready to leave. In order for your HHG to be sent the orders will need to be accompanied, otherwise they will just put them into storage until they get that message stating they are. If you have any more questions just ask away. or there is a site on military.com forums just for questions like this. Here is the link to that http://forums.military.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/82700030713/m/4410032071001
- yeah, not to worry. you will need a well woman exam that is no more than 12 months old(preferably six months) and all non routine dental work needs to be done before you can go.
- for my EFMP (overseas screneing) i had to see a civilian dr but tricare covered it because i was a new spouse there is nothing to worry about it is just a general physical done by either a military dr or a civilian dr your choice depending on your insurance coverage there is nothing to worry about but general things like shot records and helth dont stress out
