Live & work in PA and Overseas - taxed by new york?

I live in PA. I was sent overseas for 3 months for work. While there, my company changed my address to a mail pouch address in New York, so my mail would automatically be sent to me overseas. When I saw my final paycheck for the year, it listed all the state taxes for the 3 month period and showed the recipient of the deducted state tax as New York instead of PA - based solely on my mail pouch address. Since I did live in PA and overseas (nothing more than a mail pouch address in NY), how is this handled? On my W-2, it merely lists STATE TAX (doesn't differentiate which state) and the amount shown is what my paycheck stub shows was paid to New York. How do I handle this? I wouldn't have even realized it was paid to New York if my paycheck stub didn't show it. Also, since I lived full time overseas (Mexico) for 3 months, should I even owe PA state tax on the amount I made while over there?

  1. Fill out the tax form for New York and let them know you never lived there. You will get a refund.
