Social Security / retirement benifits?

Hi, here's my question. My dad turned 65 years of age in feb. of 2008, for his retirement benefits he is getting $466 a month since 1997 or 1998 and for Social security $779 since he turned 62.. Everyone we talk to says he should be getting more than that. Also he cannot work, he went to get his eyes checked and they gave him prescription glasses, but he sees exactly the same with them on. He took them back and they couldn't understand why he couldn't see with them, how would he be able to qualify for supplemental security income? I'm not trying to just get him money, but trying to get him the money he deserves, he has worked for 50 years and the money he has he cannot live off of. Thanks for any help given.

  1. the amount of social security your dad gets depends on how much he put in while he was working. same for the retirement benefits. My recommendation would be to go to the social security administration to make sure that they recorded and calculated what he is supposed to get correctly. I know it isn't right but these days it is very hard to just live on social security income. you almost have to have your own savings and stuff. Let that be a lesson to you. start putting money into your own retirement now and you will have an easier retirement without worries.
  2. You need to contact the Social Security Administration.
