retirement savings ..can I file them as a tax credit if they are taken out pre-tax??

1. Pre-tax contributions to a 401k are eligible for the Retirement Savings Credit. So...yes.
2. If you are not a student then you can claim them on Form 8880
3. If you are asking whether you can deduct them, no they're already deducted. But if you are asking about the Retirement Savings Credit for low income earners, yes 401K contribuitons are eligible.
