My husband has a degree from overseas, but he cant seem to get a job here!! Any advice?

My Husband came from overseas last summer, he has a university degree in Mechanical Engineer from overseas. He had a job overseas in his major. Ever since he came here, he did a resume and has been applying for jobs in his major, but no luck. Right now has a job in a restaurant, but not in his major. Any advice plz!!!! any advice of what he should do to raise his chance of getting a job in his major.

  1. Get a degree here
  2. move back to where his degree was worth something.
  3. Just try to make his resume as good as you can. My wife is from australia and we went through the same thing. Nobody wants to hire someone without previous work experience inside of the US so its tough to get started. I think she went through every bit of 20 applications before she finally got her job. Good luck I know its tough!
  4. play the lottery
  5. He should talk to a US accredited university, and see what is needed to transfer his overseas credits to a US college program. Prehaps he can earn a US degree shortly. US companies don't put much stock in degrees awarded by foreign universities.
  6. That's not much to go on. Where is "here"? Assuming it's an English-speaking country, does he communicate well in English? The keys are being able to fit-in and communicate well.
  7. One thing he might try is putting what is most relevant or helpful first on his resume- if he has work experience in the field, he should list his experience first. His education should be at the end of his resume. Also, he should find out if that university had any international accreditations. If it did, then he should list them. The last thing I would recommend is continuing the job search. I know many people who have degrees in the US and are looking for jobs in the US but are underemployed because the job market is so tough.
  8. He will have to re-educate himself here in America, there is no way around it. There are certain countries that America will not except degrees from, especially third world countries. Why don't you guys want to live in the country he was educated in....better yet, why did he do this?
  9. My whole family is from Europe. Has your husband had his diploma translated through an accredited company here? If not, it would not hurt to do it. Finding a good job takes time....but if he is really persistent and keeps looking sooner or later he will find what he is qualified to do. Restaurant work could be fun...we have all been there and done that. Just keep the positive attitude and his efforts are going to be rewarded!!! Good luck!
  10. A good friend had the same problem when she got here. She ended up going to the local university and asking for an equilibration. Basically they took the classes from her education abroad and determined that she not only exceeded their specification but was about half way through their Masters Degree program. About 7 years ago that cost her about $50 in fees. It was well worth the investment. You may want to find out if there are any particular certifications for Mechanical Engineering that he can test for. I know that the Civil Engineers take a Professional Engineer test and a years apprenticeship before they can get their engineering stamp and number. Good luck!
