Creative Fence Ideas?
My goal is to keep my dogs out of a portion of my yard. It won't take much of a fence as they will not bother anything that I put up. The reason I am trying to think of alternative ideas to just putting up a short wooden fence is because of my HOA. I could merely plant a row of shrubs and my dogs would leave it alone and that would not require HOA approval. I would like to get some creative ideas from you guys to see if you have any better ideas. I have a LARGE yard. I need to recapture a bit of my patio/yard for my own use and keep my dogs in the back 40. Oh, and it has to look good. No chicken wire... I cannot do the electric fence thing because my dogs routinely chew off each other's collars. Three English Mastiffs. 200 lbs each. But they won't cross a baby gate that is just leaning against a door frame. That is why it won't take much of a fence.

- I had the same problem and created a secret garden with some wrought iron fencing I got from our local reuse-it center. Our metal recycler had these 3 foot sections of old rusty wrought iron fencing removed from a demolished building. It was assorted colors, so I just primed and painted it all Rustoleum wrought iron black and lined them up in the area I didn't want the fur girls to go in. Mine had ends that were easy to push into the ground and they are only about 3-4 foot high. I now have flowering vines growing over them so they are quite charming. If you don't have a re-use it center near you, they sell short trellises on sticks that you can do the same thing with and connect them with white twist or zip ties. (Mine are attached with black zip ties which are inconspicious and hold up better, longer than the metal twist ties I first used). Or you can build a small frame out of treated lumber, attach a trellis to it or even attach one of those bamboo sheeting pieces that are easy to cut to size.
- would a stone wall work? perhaps not even a wall, just a line of stones along some small tree shrubs to create a "barrier" and warn them to stay back when they come near it or cross it / reward the dogs to say on the desired side by giving them treats and toys on that back 40? Sort of like the dog whisperer? :-)
- Good looking if you can find it - wheathered stump bases from felled trees. Land-clearing or lumber companies often need to remove the entire tree and it they can lever the base out, the remaining splay or broken roots with the bottom foot or two of trunk is set on it's side on the ground so the ends of the roots lap those of the next stump - it looks cool and you do not need to open the groud to install it. Some people call them "root fences" also, they do not need to be as large as the ones in the pictures in the attached articles, of course.
