retirement oz

Could YOU retire in your 40s?

A really good friend of mine retired at 42 basically through sheer hard work and frugal living. He has given me a great many tips which I find to be pretty decent advice from someone I admire so much. He says that most people who earn big bucks soothe their agony of having dull jobs by placating themseleves with the big house, fancy car, diamond ring etc etc etc. You know it was always the running joke with the guys that he was a "litlte big weird" as he never had girlfriends, but his words were why have women when I'm working to retire? it's only money and also I could end up having children. You know what amazes me now is that he's dating a lovely lady, he says it's because he's worked hard he can afford to date now that he's retired. The funny thing is that though he now drives a very expensive car, he still lives in a small house which he says is perfect for him. I'm so proud of Jason, great guy and I for one won't be retired and living the dream at 42!! What do you think?

  1. that's pretty cool. I would love to hear these frugal tips.
  2. Good for him yes hard work pays off I wish I could retire in my 50's but that is not going to happen unless I win the lottery...
  3. If I marry someone rich or god forbid my father passes away.
  4. very lucky - i doubt i'll be able to retire until i'm into my 80's.....
  5. I could never retire in my 40's, but good for him. He must haved save quite a bit to last him for the rest of his life. The sacrifice must have been worth it. Unconventional.
  6. I am in my 40's and don't think that I could.
  7. The problem with that approach is what if you don't live long enough? I got quite a few family members myself who never lived to see 42. It sounds like there's quite a lot he missed out on and is now trying to make up for. You gotta enjoy your life while it's here, tommorow is guaranteed to nobody.
  8. good for him. i would need to invest my pension in some pretty speculative investments to even retire by 60.....
  9. I retired aged 43 and only work part time when I feel like it from home,,the very best thing I have ever done,,
  10. I guess we all make our own choices in life. I'm always telling my younger son 'work hard now and you won't need to when you are old'. You friend seems the epitome of that philosophy. Personally I opted for kids and love...am now single and will never have the wealth your friend clearly has. Good on him but I don't regret my children and the wisdom I received in retrospect!!!
  11. I retired at 48 and thought I was doing alright, but 42? Well done that man. Although I did find time to date and got married to a wonderful girl. Funny thing is now I'm retired I'm so busy I don't know where I found the time to work all those years.
  12. I really am hoping to.!!!! Been my dream for years
  13. Ask him when he reaches 70 if he still thinks he did it right. While it all sounds wonderful now, I'm thinking that when he is old and alone with no kids, he is going to question his past motivations. I will not be able to retire in my 40's, because I have a family to support, and when I am old, I will not be lonely and rich, but content and loved.
