does service time in Individual Ready Reserves(IRR) count towards military RETIREMENT?

Public Comments

  1. yes, if you get a government job before the time in IRR expires. if it expires and you have not reenlisted active or reserve it does not count. it is alittle complicated, but there are IRR recruiters at MEPs that handle these kind of things and can give you all the details, but these recruiters only work out of the MEPs they are not the average recruiters in the offices for enlisting.
  2. Providing you are active within the IRR and earn enough points to make a good year for retirement purposes. You can earn points for correspondence courses completed and tours of duty, you already have 15 points for participation being enrolled in the IRR.
  3. Just to clarify on Oscarsix . . .'s point: Yes, time in the IRR can count toward a Retirement from the reserves. Each branch of service has its own policy. In the Navy, you need a minimum number of points to qualify for a "good year." In the USMC, you can qualify for reserve retirement with less stringent criteria. I recommend you search for the proper instruction under the key words: Reserve Retirement and your branch of service.
