retirement oz

How many more years until Yankees realize they screwed up by retiring so many numbers?

All the players will be from 50's and up, I guess, for another couple of decades...

  1. I don't think it will be too bad, there are (after all) 99 numbers to choose from, and I think that all the history (and there constant celebration of it) is part of the draw and allure of the Yankees for players and fans alike.
  2. When they start to have 3 digit numbers, the monolithic legend will only grow. . .
  3. they are obviously gon 2 retire derek jeter's # but they realize that 2 so now u hav 2 be a hall of famer now 2 probably get ur number retired w/ them
  4. The Yankees have not retired that many numbers. Only 15 numbers have been retired by the Yankees plus the number 42 which was retired by major league baseball. That leaves many numbers left to use. In the current Yankee run, who other than Jeter and Rivera deserves to have his number retired?
  5. That will happen when they find themselves having to go to "alpha" characters. I can't wait to see which Yankee player will ware the alpha "SOX" on his jersey.
  6. what do you mean many numbers it's only 15 now and you will have 2 for derek jeter retired. there are many numbers left. so i doubt that is one of the problems that yankees are brewing about right now.
  7. I don't think they will realize they screwed up, I think they will realize that they made some good decisions.....you gotta be good to get your number retired.............retired numbers equal success.......how long will it take you to comprehend this??? LOL
  8. After they retire #2 (Jeter) and #6 (Torre), they'll be out of single digits except zero, but if they open up to leading zeros, there's ten more unis (#00-09) available. Even crossing off #51 for Bernie, there'll be a lot of options left. The Yanx will retire #42 for Rivera, as well, but since that one cannot be reissued it makes no difference.
  9. Why is it a mistake?
  10. 20 Years after they retire the whole 1998 & 2000 teams and Jeter, A-Rod, Joba, Hughes, Kennedy, Posada, Melky...
  11. The players who have had their numbers retired by the Yankees obviously have deserved it. However, that may not be in the case with number 42, retired, as one respondant has duly noted, by MLB. I think it is an insult to all the great minority players the game has seen: Why hasn't the number of the first Hispanic player been retired? For that matter, can anyone name the first Hispanic player in major league history? Jackie Robinson was a fine player, though not one of the absolute greatest the game has seen, and he has been honored by being voted into the Hall of Fame. MLB's decision to retire his number throughout the game was nothing more than a shameless and disgraceful attempt to gain a foothold in the A-A market. If baseball want's to honor a minority player why not retire Roberto Clemente's #21? His talent equalled--and in my opinion surpassed--Robinson's and he died while on a humanitarian mission tdelivering supllies to earthquake-ravaged Nicaragua. Clemente was a true hero and much more worthy of the honor than Robinson. Incidentally, the first Hispanic player in MLB was Louis Castro.
  12. they can start using symbols, like #, %, @, and my favorite ?
  13. I dont think that they will have too many to where they have to go with the 50's on up. I mean, they do have a lot. But they do not have a ton more players right now that will go down with them to the hall of fame. I mean they are going to have A-Rod who most likely will unless something bad happens like he takes steroids or put in jail or something like that which prevents him from playing baseball ever again. But I dont think they will have that for a really really long time.
  14. when you have had as many good players as they have, what else can you do?
  15. The players that have their numbers retired by the Yankees have earned it. I think a better question would be, "How many more years until the Boston Celtics realize they screwed up by retiring so many numbers?" Granted, players like Bird, Russell, Cousy, Havlicek, etc. deserved it. However, what did players like Maxwell, Heinsohn, McCauley, etc. Also, I think the Celtics retiring #1 for the owner, and #2 for Auerbach aren't smart decisions since the owner, nor Auerbach, never put on a Celtics jersey. Auerbach was a great coach, and he deserves to be honored by the Celtics, but to retire a number that he never wore, is rediculous. Retiring #1 for owner Walter Brown is even more stupid. When it comes to retiring numbers when some players don't deserve it, then the Celtics easily run away with this one. If someone can explain to me why players like Nelson, Heinsohn, McCauley, Maxwell, etc. deserve their numbers retired, I'd really like to hear it.
  16. thats a really good point. with all the money they have, they just keep getting really good players, and keep retiring more numbers. Theres probably 5 or 6 guys on the team now that could probably have their numbers retired.
  17. More like the real question is how many times do you have to ask the same question? I don't know, maybe the Yankees think that they have a lot of real good players, and that they deserve to have thier #s retired. Most likey if they do realize this, it will be when they start running out of #s to give players, coaches, etc.
