retirement oz

What is a good book to give as a gift for a retiring English teacher?

She is about 50 and she loves to read. I want to get her a book that she hasn't read before.

Public Comments

  1. Try "Flowers For Algernon" it is pretty good.
  2. Try "The Giving Tree." She's probably read it, since it's a popular children's book, but the message she'll get when you give it to her will definitely stick with her. In the front cover or on a nice piece of stationary, write her a sentimental, short (or long) note to let her know how she's affected you. My class did this for our new music conductor at the end of his first year, and he loved it.
  3. Honestly? You want to give her something she's never read. Something she should read? Something she wants to read, has wanted to read, will always love? Give her a gift card. No, you won't get to chosen it yourself, but it also won't be her 35th copy of Flowers for Algernon which she has probably 1) read 35 times and 2) taught 35 times. I'll bet she likes best to choose her own books.
  4. Why not give her a beautifully bound copy of a novel about a good teacher? Perhaps she might appreciate Goodbye, Mr. Chips by James Hilton or Good Morning, Miss Dove by Frances Gray Patton. There is another book I'd recommend: Heart to Heart Stories for Teachers by Joe Wheeler (editor). The anthologies he's compiled are wonderful and filled with heartwarming and touching stories. See http://www.amazon.com/Heart-Stories-Teachers-Joe-Wheeler/dp/0842354123/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1210388994&sr=1-1 This http://www.joewheelerbooks.com/books.shtml has a list of his books. I've heard good things about The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, too. I hope this helps.
  5. u should give her the "Spirit Bear" Great Book
  6. You might consider a book by Gervase Phinn. I don't know where you are, but he was quite famous on UK TV a few years ago, telling true stories about his experiences in schools as a school inspector. He recounted and wrote very well about the teachers, school secretaries and, mainly, the children, and seems to have a gift for bringing out the best in children. As mentioned on the site I append, his books are in the tradition of James Herriot's series about his life as a vet, and are heart-warming and uplifting. If you're in the US, I'm sure your teacher won't have read it! http://www.amazon.com/Other-Side-Dale-Gervase-Phinn/dp/0140275428 http://www.gervase-phinn.com/gervase_pages/biography.htm
