How can you save money with internet phone service if you have to pay for home phone service to get internet?

I'm just curious because I see all the vonage/skype/magicjack commercials advertising how you can save money on your phone calls, but if you already have to pay for a landline to even get internet service what's the point? Cable isn't available in my area and satelite internet costs too much. Is there another type of internet service available that I don't know about that doesn't use a phone line for high-speed? Or are these services only beneficial for those who live in areas that have cable internet available? And to get cable internet, don't you have to have cable service? I'm just trying to find a way to save money without sacrificing services I use and without paying for services I don't (like cable tv). Also, which of the internet-based phone services offers the best international rates (Honduras)?

  1. The only advantage to you would be if you make a lot of long distance calls - especially international calls. In this case, the VoIP rates might be better than those from your phone company.
  2. All i know is that when i used internet phone service(yahoo) when calling my wife in china, if i called her home or cell, cost was .01 a min, if called her computer it was free. Really beat the $450 a month i was spending on regular phone
  3. You save money because you pay the phone company for internet. They give you internet and make your line so it cannot make phone calls. Your internet service is cheaper, then with Vonage you are paying for a cheap voice over internet provider. My internet is 24.95 a month and my phone is 24.95 a month as well. Before we switched to vonage we had at&t for phone and internet and it was around $85.00 a month.
  4. Most telephone companies (Verizon etc) are now offering 'naked DSL'. That is DSL broadband without landline service. You DO need a telephone line to you house of course.
  5. some cable companies offer cable internet without the tv service. Personally while I was on dsl I had skype anyway. we did not have any long distance and skype to skype is free the program download is free and it was about $3 a month for unlimited calling anywhere in the U.S. and Canada. I did just read that they are offering international unlimited long distance for around $10 a month.
  6. I'm afraid you will need high-speed Internet for all those services!! you need cable.....DSL...or wifi if you have it in your area!! yes, its really nice to save money...I use Packet8 VoiP and skype and the MagicJack....and I love them all....I have send my family abroad the MJ so they can call me for free in the US with an US area code!!! the cheapest service for you would be voice.yahoo.com for your country!! but no matter what you do....you will need HS Internet!!
