retirement oz

When should I retire a monologue?

I have some monologues I have been using for years. They are still age appropriate and they have served me well. I have gotten a lot of call backs and work with them. I feel really comfortable with them and I feel like I do them very well. Now, however, I'm starting to wonder if it's okay to still use them even though a lot of people have already seen them (they're still getting me work), or if I should replace them with new ones. Any thoughts?

  1. If they no longer inspire you. And, as you've noted, if you are auditioning for the same people, you'll want to show them something new.
  2. You should retire them when they feel stale. Also, as the previous poster said, if you are auditioning for the same directors, you really should get new material so they don't see the same piece over and over. I have a few I keep in rotation, depending on what the role calls for, but I always have different ones for the next show I'm auditioning for. I'd say, don't throw them out, and toss the key, but expand your library of works :)
