If Goose Gossage makes the HOF should the Yankees retire his number or give him a placque?
What should they do? He'll go in as a Yankee right? This guy was Mariano before Mariano. Plus he pitched 3 innings sometimes! LETS GO YANKEES!

- Neither.
- No.
- A plaque at best. Retiring a number, especially for as storied a franchise as the Yankees, requires more than just being a great player. There are a lot of players in the Hall of Fame who don't have their numbers retired. You need not only the great career, but a certain, perhaps undefinable quality, linking you to the team. But the Yankees have Monument Park as a way of honoring players who were great for them, but not special enough to warrant a number being retired. As an example, you can count on Derek Jeter having both after he retires.
- If goose makes it in, the yankees might retire his number, but from what I read, he did'nt seem to have the numbers for a placque. :) Go Jays Go!
- Absolutely. I love Mariano but Goose has a better ERA, and gave up less hits per 9 innings and more strike outs per 9. Love em both. Both should be in.
- I don't care what the Yankees do, but let us note that, while Gossage's career is certainly Hall-worthy and a significant part of that career was built during his Yankees tenure, he was with the Bombers for only six seasons (1978-83) and part of a seventh (1989). Is that really enough for the franchise to bestow one of its signal honors? The Yankees got the best Goose had to give, sure, but were those seven seasons enough?
- Sure- they retired Phil Rizzuto's number and he was garbage.
- If the Yankees keep retiring numbers there won't be any left for the players. Goose may get into the HOF but I doubt he will be given a plaque or have his number retired. By the way, it's plaque not placque.
- If the Yankees can retire Reggie's number, they can put up #54 for Gossage. He was a Yankee longer than Reggie.
- The more numbers any team retires, the more they diminish the honor of having any number retired. I don't think Gossage's work as a Yankee merits them retiring his number. But with the Yankees you never know. I could see him getting a plaque. I could also see the person who thought up the 5th inning YMCA routine for their groundskeepers getting a plaque. And maybe some ticket taker who has been there for 20 years.
- He will go in as a Yankee for sure. The Yankees can't afford to retire any more numbers because they don't have enoughf to go around now. He was the perfect relief pitcher for sure!!!!!!
- The Yankees would most likely honor him in some way
