- Look into Chicago having a "PumpHouse" it is a place where they have obstacle courses that have all different types of activities like Jupiter Jumps and blow up slides. Good luck.
- You could do a Polar Express theme. Since he's 5, im assuming he's in kinder. I'm a kinder teacher and we cover the polar expres in class. You could rent the movie and ask everyone to come in their pjs and slippers. You can make some yummy hot chocolate with peppermint sticks, make some christmas snacks, and a hands on activity. Also, don't forget to give the a jingle bell before they leave!
- there are a few things you can do.. first, elk grove park district has indoor party rooms. There is a really big room that has a carousel.. That's pretty cool. You can have it a "carnival theme" : include cotton candy maker, face painter, etc. You can also have it in Coco Keys. That's an indoor waterpark in Arlington Heights. It's actually pretty good because you can rent tables to bring food in.
- My son has a November birthday, and for two years now, we've had his birthday party at a pizza restaurant with an arcade. It doesn't cost a lot, and the kids have a ball. You don't have to do a Chuck E. Cheese kind of deal, just any arcade. Also, the two main times of the year that children's movies come out are in the summer, and around Christmas. If there is a movie coming out around that time, a lot of movie theaters actually have birthday party facilities, where the kids eat, play some games, have the birthday party and watch the movie.
- In our area we have a few bounce house places. Not the ones you rent for the backyard... but indoor facilities with private party rooms, where you can often rent the place for a 2 hour party - or at least go during open hours but have some private party room time for drinks and cake. Bowling is always fun, indoor mini-golf, skating rink (ice or roller), McDonald's, ChuckECheese's, one of those gymnastics places or kiddy gyms. this has lots of local listing for fun kid activities: http://chicago.parentzone.com/parentresources.asp?prid=626
