Needing cocktail party ideas?

I am in the process of planning an elegant cocktail party for my mom's 60th birthday. I am struggling to find good ways to make this event classy and memorable without making myself crazy. Can anyone help me out with some funky ideas for decor, or a cool theme idea, etc? The best my husband and I have been able to come up with is to select a cocktail to represent each decade since she was born but we're stuck finding drink ideas (we did find a funky "lava lamp" drink for the 60s) Any help will be appreciated.

2. Why not hold the party at your mothers favorite restaurant/dining spot. If she doesn't have one....look for a nice little cozy (B&B type) place in your area. Ask if you could rent a section of the building/room (as if you were planning a dinner rehearsal party for a wedding). Doing this would allow you to discuss your ideas with the restaurant....they would be able to suggest the perfect cocktail/entree ideas. You could bring in your mothers favorite flowers and perhaps a few candles. Giving her an elegant birthday she'll never forget. Best of luck.
3. If it`s hard to find a decade for each drink just try and have a variety of drinks at the party like... the martini, wine, tequila, scotch, vodka and beer or just ask her wath she drank in those decades.... or maybe go to www.cocktails.com and find some more varieties...
