How many years of service is required from retirement from a County service?
If I get a job from a County govt, what's the required minimum number of years of service to be eligible for retirement? 20 years?

- depends on the job......................clerical are longer.jobs and police are shorter
- I suppose it depends on the state but here in Kentucky 20 years was for hazardous duty jobs (police, corrections etc) there was a longer length of time required for other county positions. Check with your county to see if this is the same
- typically it's 30 yrs... unless it's a job where it's more risky such as police... which i believe is 20-25 but if u work for welfare, childrens services, etc. it's 30
- This may depend on the county, your age, and your job and when you were first hired. Different counties may offer different pension plans. Typically, there are different pension plans for police and fire versus other staff. Counties my reform their pension plans but often leave intact the old plans for employees who were hired before the date new entry was closed. The plan may offer a mix of age and years of service. For example, it might have a rule of 70 or similar (your age plus years of service must be at least 70) or a tiered set of service requirements (i.e., 60 years and any service, 55 and 10 years, 30 and any age). And there may be early retirement options (although the benefit may be acturailly reduced). In other words, talk to the county you are interested in!
