Are Overseas Service Chevrons awarded whilst a prisoner of war?

My great-uncle was a WW1 POW in Germany for four years. Would he have been awarded long service / overseas service chevrons for the period?

  1. Never heard of overseas service chevrons, But when someone is held as a POW, Nothing stops, Not even promotions, A POW can be selected for promotion even while listed as MIA, Such as with the case of Michael Speicher, Still listed as Missing/Captured during the during Desert Storm, He was captured in 1991 as a Lt Commander and promoted to Captain in 2001, "In 2001 Richard Danzig, the navy secretary, changed Speicher’s status from killed in action to missing in action, the first formal acknowledgment that he might have survived. He was promoted to captain and salary payments to his family resumed." The whereabouts of Capt. Speicher are to this day unknown
