retirement oz

Can you claim another pension, other than your work pension, if you retire early, due to ill health?

If so what is it called? How do you apply for it?

  1. No. Your state pension doesn't kick in until retirement age. Before then you'll have to claim incapacity benefit or whatever it's called.
  2. Yes. There are lots of benefits available that will top you up to the applicable government set level. Depends on your age when you retire eg pension credit if your 60. Income support if your under 60 Incapicity benefit and possible DLA if you are ill enough Get down to your local CAB fo a benefits check
  3. I am assuming with this answer that you are in the UK, if not then I apologise! There is nothing to stop you applying for early retirement from all your arrangements even if you've been granted an ill health pension from your current employer. If you need to buy an annuity with the proceeds then you should get a better rate than the average healthy person your age as you'll be able to apply for an impared life annuity. If you are lucky enough to have a deferred final salary arrangement it is worth asking if they have any ill health terms for deferred members. This will normally be granted at the Trustees discretion and you will have to pay for any medical reports required but you lose nothing in asking. All of this assumes that you're over the minimum retirement age of 50. Good luck!
