What are some unique and considerate gift ideas for a person in the hospital?

My friend recently began dating a man who was in a terrible accident yesterday and suffered a severe leg injury. She wants to bring him a basket of thoughtful gifts, what should she include?

1. If he is going to be in the hospital for a while - real food is nice (but check with doctor first to make sure he can have it.) Reading material is always nice. Get him a box of sharpies so every one can sign the cast.
2. hand held games... wal mart has some for 10 dollars... hangman, battleship, yahtzee... so on magazines, depending on the sex... im in my 20's and i played with paper dolls and coloring books when i was in the hospital for awhile haha
