How old do you have to be to retire from being a cop in California?

Or how many years do you have to put in to retire from being a cop?

  1. Depends on where you work but you can figure anywhere between 20 & 25 years.
  2. I think you have to be at least 54 or older! That one SWAT cop who was shot here last week said, he was retiring in 3 years and he was 51! So I think it's 54 and up!
  3. Normal retirement is 20 years but if you are disabled by an on the job injury there is not time limit.
  4. Usually you retire after 20-25 years of service.
  5. 20+ Year retirement, so if they were 21 when they started they could be 41 when they retire... There is no "age" limit on retirement.. It is a individual basis.. I can actually retire when I am 46 with 25+ year Retirement that we have in North Carolina.
  6. Ok from net surfing what I gathered is where the policeman is employed. Is he or she working for a university? One town or city will pay and have different benefits than another because of the union agreements they have. So your best bet is to find out which union covers the area you are looking into and asking the union directly.
  7. Most departments in California are linked to CalPERS and depending upon the contract that their specific agency has with CalPERS one could retire as early as 50 and you can do so with as little as 5 years of service and still draw a pension. Most of course stay for 20 years or 30 years.
