What Health Insurance do you Recommend for Retiring Cancer Survivor?
My mom is over 60 and she is hoping to retire soon. However, is it true that health insurance costs almost $1000 per month for cancer survivors? She is in remission over 5 years.. She is currently only working to avoid high health insurance costs.

- I am going through the same questions. I am 55, single, with prostate cancer that is always being treated to keep it from running amuck. Continuation of insurance under COBRA for me will be about $1000 per month. It does not matter if I have cancer because COBRA continues existing insurance without reappying for it. I could reapply for new insurance to get it down, but because of my preexisting condition, there are no insurance companies that would take me. COBRA continuation is my only option.
- it is virtually impossible to get insurance if you are a cancer survivor. in Texas, there is the Texas Risk Pool, run by the state, whereby those who cannot find insurance elsewhere can get it there...it's very expensive, $719/month for a 60 year old cancer survivor. the benefits are pretty good, and it's run by Blue Cross. it was Blue Cross who told me of it, so they might be a good source of information for your state.

- It is so sad, but true in that so many people are unable to find insurance, especially if they have had any sort of pre-existing condition, such as cancer. It will be pretty much impossible for her to find an insurance company that will cover her should she need to insure herself without the group policy she gets right now through her employer. Check with some of the options that others before me offered here. Then also check into an alternative option that can be used with or without traditional insurance. It's Ameriplan and in the 16 years they have been in business they have helped many, many people who were faced with situations similar to this here. http://www.mybenefitsplus.com/cberney Check out the plans, as well as search for providers, and specialists that are in your area, or more so your mothers. And let me know if you have any questions. Good Luck and hopefully you will be able to find what will work for your mom so that she can in fact retire, and do so without the fear of health insurance costs.
- Try this one - http://healthplans.my-age.net - I personally have their health insurance. As I know they can provide coverage with preexisting condition.
- I would suggest Ameriplan it is very affordable check out the website at http://www.ameriplan.com/ and email me at eze20062007@yahoo.com if she wants to sing up because I work for the company
- I used to sell insurance and I know that if she has survived 5 plus years without cancer comming back that most insurance companies will take her but because of her age she will pay a lot for insurance. Also when you call the insurance companies unless they directly ask you over the phone dont tell them she had cancer. I am not saying lie definelty tell them when the representative is in your home trying to sell you the insurance. The best way to find good insurance companies is to call the insurance commisoners office for your state and they can mail you a list of all good standing insurance companies. Also the Continuation of benefits rehabilition act called cobra is by law if she is single she can get cobra for 18 months she has to pay a little more than what her company paid for her group plan but sometimes this is a good route. They dont consider pre existing conditions unless they were excluded from her plan while she was employed but very important she has to elect this thru her Human resource dept within 30 days of her last day of employment or she wont be eligible. Also Medicare sometimes lets you get it earlier than 65 go to your local medicare(social security office) to find out if your mom is eligible. Also if your mom had someone other than herself on her group plan thru her job she can get cobra for 24 months and if she has a disability it is longer.
