Social Security Retirement benefits?

I am retiring at age 58, and will stop contributing to SS. When I start drawing SS at age 62 how do they base your checks? Is it based on your highest income level or your income from age 57 to age 62? does any one know or do I need to call the SS office.

2. I think it based on points that you have earned throughout your career and not based on your highest income. Why would they do that? That means I could slack for half of my life and before I retire get a high paying job and retire.
