Do Politicians have special retirement benefits aside from Social Security?

Theres an email floating aroung that states that Politicians have their own retirement program which pays them millions of dollars, aside from regular social security, and that the American taxpayer is paying for their luxury retirement plan?

  1. This has been going around since 2000. They do receive pensions, as many other people, but it is determined by their length of service, age at retirement, etc. It is funded by a combination of general tax provisions and their personally paying into the program. The average annual annuity for a Congressperson is about $50,000.
