retirement oz

What is the most apropriate age for a st. bernard bitch to retire from breeding?

I have heard so many different opinions. Some say don't breed her past 4 yrs old and others say she should retire at age 6. Also, I am wondering the same thing about the male as well.

  1. 5 years for females, 7 years for males.
  2. For a female I think it depends on how many litters you make her have- I think it's awfule to breed a b*tch more then three time- its so hard on their boddies..I really don't think it's fair- for dogs I would say Between 5-6
  3. 4 to 5 for a female and a male ..well as long as he can preform about 6 to 8 yrs..
  4. Dont ever ever breed a female dog past 6. The safest time to retire a Dam is at 4-5 yrs of age. The safest time to retire a Sire is at 6-7 yrs old.
  5. Join your local breed club. Get a mentor. They are the experts.
  6. I find it interesting that there are so many Saint Bernard breeders on here that I didn't know!!! I have 2 breeds of dogs-- I can tell you the breeding age guidelines for those two breeds of dogs are DIFFERENT.. and that each individual b*tch and bloodline is DIFFERENT. There is one line of Samoyeds who haul sled until their early teens and are bred until the age of 9... another line of Samoyeds barely LIVES to the age of 9. Your best bet is to get in touch with the St. Bernard Club of America http://www.saintbernardclub.org/ and talk to real breeders of Saint Bernards. I'll also give this a star for St. Lady who is an actual Saint breeder. Any other advice on here unless from an experienced Saint person is pure speculation and guessing.
