  1. I once saw a very cute cake decorated with Fruit Loops. Anything you have around can be interesting if you are creative. Dig in the cupboards!
  2. If you have some fruit you can use that as a garnish. You could also use a pipping bag and do a design on top of the cake or around the base with the chocolate icing, it will add a little texture to your cake. If you have m&ms or anything like that you could use it on the top of the cake or simply but a cherry in the middle, sometimes less is more.
  3. take a plastic ziplock baggie and cut one bottom corner off (the cut off end will resemble a triangle) BE CAREFUL NOT TO CUT TOO MUCH OFF! Just a sm.-med. triangle will do. put white icing in the baggie and seal it. twist the top and now you have a icing bag. if the cake is for a girl put connecting swirls all around the out side of the cake and if its for a boy do like big shapes. if you have cable watch ACE of CAKE, or go to www.marthastuart.com she always has good ideas, or you could go to the library and get a book on cake decoration. or google it.
  4. In a pinch, you could gather some flowers from the garden, wrap the ends in plastic wrap or foil and stick them in, just before serving. Sprinkles?, make some white frosting and just make dots or a border. Decorate with animal cracker/cookies? gumdrops, candies, hershey kisses, ?? Look in your pantry for some ideas....licorice? You can even use powder sugar and a cookie cutter as a template--that is sooo easy and so nice! Good luck...hope I gave you some ideas.
  5. You can use crushed walnuts (or nuts of anykind) on top.The same with coconut or coloured sprinkles.Swirl the icing first with your knife or spatula. Small silk flowers look lovely but you can't eat them of course. If it's for a b'day you can run off a pic on your computer.Cut it out and place on top of the cake along with some of the above around the pic. Smarties or M&M's are great also. Just let your imagination run wild. You can find lots of ideas in your cupboards or pantry.
  6. Sprinkle with chocolate chips or white chocolate chips, or if you have a chocolate bar, grate or shave the chocolate onto the cake. Or you could just break up the bar into chunks and sprinkle over. Marachino cherries. Colored Sprinkles. Do you have powdered sugar and milk? Mix powdered sugar with enough milk to make a thick icing. Put the icing in a plastic bag and cut one corner off, make the hole pretty small. You can use this to write on your cake, or make decorative swirls. If you have food coloring you can color the icing.
  7. Here are a couple of quick fixes to spice up a cake. I utilize a zip lock bag as a pastry bag. I take a little bit off of one of the bottom corners of the bad. I then load in the frosting (if accessible, load in a contrasting color) and squeeze gently until you force it up to the corner. Then make whatever designs you can, I usually just make some swirls in the corners. Then if I have some sliced almonds or other nuts handy, i place them on the cake around the borders. I let them fall so they don't look too neat. I also use toasted coconut, i sprinkle it over the entire cake and it rocks!
