Are bonds a good investment right now? ?

My grandad (rest his soul) retired a wealthy man by simply buying bonds every time he got paid (plus he was a coal miner...union benefits). I was thinking of doing the same thing. Are state (VA for me) and federal bonds a good investment? why or why not, and does anyone have better ideas? Thanks!

  1. With the economy the way that it is bonds are a good safe investment. Depending on the type of government bond that you buy the maturity rate differs. I bonds are purchased at face value and have a penalty if cashed in before 5 years. EE bonds are sold at half face value and take 18 years to mature. Bonds also continue to gain value for up to 30 years.
  2. not really, it doesnt work how you think...buy them at half face value and they double in like 10 years...it goes off interest. My husband had some that should have matured but didnt, the bank had explained that when the interest rates are down it takes alot longer to mature...so unless you plan on keeping them for 50 years.....I dont think I would...be better to buy gold...
