Planning our first trip to Europe... How much is a safe amount to save up for spending money??

We are planning our first trip to Europe. We plan on staying for a month. Not including air fare and hotels. How much spending money should we be expecting to spend. (We aren't big on bringing back a lot of knick-knacks.. We want to spend more on activities) Ball park park ranges are fine.. We just want to make sure we aren't underestimating!!

  1. 1 month = 30 days so each day Break first - Lunch - Supper (dinner) 10 different entrances Drink´s let´s say you will need 150 euro/day x 30 = 4500 euro or 6000 us
  2. It would help if I knew where you are going and exactly how many people...but in any case...I think 4500 euros is a little much for a month...if you eat out of delis, bakeries, or the supermarket (with an occasional sit-down restaurant) you can save yourself a lot of money for other things such as museums and city tours (by the way, if you're going to cities like London, Paris, Madrid, etc. - a big money saver are the hop-on, hop-off tours - roughly they cost about 25-30 euros per adult, and many are good for two days. In addition you can get some discount coupons to other things from the operators. Example: The Big Bus Tour in London gives a voucher for a free Thames River Cruise). Anyway, if you play it smart, 2500 to 3000 euros should be enough (this would include any transportation within or between countries). Just be careful though if you're going in the U.K. or Switzerland, they don't use the euro (they use the Sterling & the Franc respectively) and are among the most expensive European countries - so if you are going to spend a significant amount of time in either of these countries, then increase your budget by an equivalent of 500 - 700 euros. Enjoy!
  3. Yeah, there are too many variables to really give you an answer based on your scant information. What countries? When are you going? Form of travel, etc.
  4. It depends what sort of trip you want to make and where! The cheapest option, backpacking, staying at youth hostels, getting meals from the supermarket, etc. you can squeeze it down to around E50 per day/person + travel costs. & a rail pass purchased before you leave will take care of that.
  5. Well I have made that trip twice already and not including Air fare and Hotel, I would say that you will need about 2 to 3 grand a person.... Start Saving sweetie!! :o)
  6. If you're on a tour where you're fed and have transportation and are given a hotel room each day, and you want to know how much to bring, plan on $25-$40 for admissions and little souvenirs and bottled water. Not sure how old you are or how you like to travel, but I'd say $200 per day as a couple if you're traveling independently (not a guided tour), staying in hotels for $80-$150 per night. You'll have some days when you spend a lot and others where you want to just have quiet days and eat in from the grocery store so that's a good average. Backpacking: I went solo and stayed in hostels 10 years ago. I spent about $50-$70 per day (including the hostels) depending on the country (exchange rate was about as bad as it is now). Factor inflation into that. I did mostly sightseeing and not many bars and went to inexpensive restaurants and take-out. Also-more on independent travel: plan ahead just a little bit. You don't have to book in advance if you're not in high season (we don't except for the first nights in and last nights out of someplace) but know what the prices are. We often check out Expedia the night before we go someplace else and have gotten great hotel rates. Also have somewhat of an idea of where you want to go and get a railpass to fit your needs before you leave. Trust me, you will use all the days! (www.raileurope.com) I'm jealous, have fun!
  7. 6k euro at least. Better to be safe than sorry, rememeber Europe is much more expensive! Trust me I live here.
